March of the pants
It’s our first animation test!
This one is the brainchild of Jasper Hesseling, who’s been tasked with finishing the clothing/detail modeling of the main characters. To see how his baggy pants geometry would deform while in motion, he set up this quick animation test.
The results were better than we’d been expecting. Jasper’s inventive use of the jiggle deformer gives the pants a loose, jaunty sway, but without having to do any tedious cloth simulation.
Looks like a winner!
Looks cool! Is that gonna be your render style? Cuz I like it. I like that squash in the ankles as the weight is taken. A possible suggestion from an animator’s standpoint, cuff bones, and a chain down the middle, so an animator can put in the 2ndary of blowing wind. (With cloth there’s always 2 ways to do it, let the TD’s do some crazy hard black magic ;) or just give the animator’s a ton of bones and make them sniffle :P ) have you seen the pigeon impossible podcast on cloth tricks? http://www.pigeonimpossible.com/podcast/011.html
Anyway, pants look good, looking forwards to some full character tests.
#07.12.2009-11:53 pmHi Alonso! The project’s render style continues to evolve, but that’s a pretty good approximation of where we’re at with it so far. It’s an attempt to replicate in 3D the look of airbrushed European comics of the 1980s.
As far as the cloth goes, we’re hoping to avoid simulations, so we’ll be using as many rigging tricks as we can. Hopefully the cartoony look will allow us to get away with simplified cloth behavior.
